Most of the employees who work for the city\u2019s business promotion agency will soon become civil servants, executive committee vice-chairman David de Cotis told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

Laval originally planned to reorganize Laval Technopole into a new economic development directorate at city hall and absorb about half the parapublic agency\u2019s staff. Then, Quebec City tabled a surprise new law to eliminate the province\u2019s regional governments and development agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat put the remaining Technopole employees at risk,\u201d de Cotis explained in an interview. \u201cMayor Marc Demers took it upon himself to guarantee everyone a job as much as possible. We decided that all of Laval Technopole would, as much as possible, be integrated within city hall.\u201d <\/p>\n

In some ways, the change simplified the shift.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe employees will remain where they are in the Laval Technopole office,\u201d he said, \u201cbut they will all be employees of the city of Laval.\u201d <\/p>\n

De Cotis also plans to give up his second hat as Technopole\u2019s interim CEO. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s taking up 20 per cent of my time,\u201d he noted. <\/p>\n

The city has lured Marc Tremblay from his job running business development for the Just for Laughs comedy festival to head the city\u2019s new economic development directorate. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s a return to the public sector for Tremblay, who worked in business development for Montreal until a decade ago, when he jumped to private industry to run the La Ronde amusement park for American recreation giant Six Flags for three years, followed by a four-year stint running the Montreal convention centre Palais des congr\u00e8s. <\/p>\n

Tremblay will likely be hitting the ground running next week, as his new boss already has ideas for him to consider when on his first day on the job, April 23. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe will bring some clout and credibility to Laval\u2019s new economic development establishment,\u201d de Cotis said. \u201cIf anyone can really sit down and explore the potential for an exposition centre in Laval, it would be him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would love something like this,\u201d de Cotis enthused. \u201cTogether with Place Bell, the Grande biblioth\u00e8que,<\/i> the aquatic centre, a Palais d\u2019exposition de Laval<\/i> is what Laval needs in the next decade, as it moves toward becoming the second most-populous city in Quebec.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition to his duties heading the city\u2019s new economic development directorate, Marc Tremblay will replace me as interim CEO of Technopole,\u201d he added. \u201cI will remain as chairman of the board. The CEO position is stipulated in the city\u2019s bylaws, but once Technopole is dissolved, it will cease to exist.\u201d <\/p>\n

Though it will soon officially disappear, he concluded, like the Cheshire cat, \u201cthe brand name Laval Technopole will remain.\u201d<\/p>\n
