It hasn\u2019t been a quiet summer for Laval MNAs. They\u2019ve been getting an earful during the past couple of weeks from concerned constituents who soon must pay higher school bus fees to get their children to school. <\/p>\n

The provincial government cutbacks particularly affect families whose children must travel from throughout Laval to attend Greek school. <\/p>\n

Last week, Hellenic Community of Montreal (HCGM) president Nicholas Pagonis spoke out on a Greek-language broadcast on Montreal\u2019s MIKE-FM. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe government is planning to eliminate transportation funding over the next three years,\u201d explained HCGM public relations and marketing director Paris Petrou. \u201cAs a community, we must inform the public. The public has already made phone calls and sent electronic messages to MNAs to complain about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cParents have already registered their kids for the coming school year, so now this comes as an extra cost to parents,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> in an interview. <\/p>\n

\u201cAll these people have expressed their concerns and we will see what the reaction is going to be,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re not very optimistic, of course, but we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo change is planned to current policy,\u201d Education Minister Yves Bolduc\u2019s spokeswoman Yasmine Abdel Fadel told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cWe\u2019re asking all government organizations to make an effort [to reduce expenditure] as well as school boards.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re working closely with school boards so the efforts we\u2019re asking them to do will not have an impact on services to students,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur main goal is to cut administrative costs to protect services to students.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cEach school board has its own challenges and distinct character,\u201d she acknowledged, \u201cso we\u2019re working closely to see how the efforts that we are asking of them can be put in place.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cEach and every school board has to make an effort,\u201d she concluded. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re working with them to see where we can cut mostly in administrative [overhead] to be more efficient with the money that they get.\u201d
