Laval\u2019s opposition leader has questioned Paolo Galati\u2019s account of why he left the Action Laval municipal political party.<\/p>\n

When Galati announced during an Aug. 8 news conference that he had defected to Mayor Marc Demers\u2019 ruling Mouvement lavallois<\/i> party, he suggested to reporters that his ouster might have been over Action Laval spending.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps the [Action Laval] team was not always in agreement about how tight a rein I kept on the budget,\u201d speculated the St. Vincent de Paul city councillor and former leader of the opposition caucus of elected officials at city council.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not correct,\u201d opposition leader Agla\u00efa Revelakis told The Suburban<\/i> in a subsequent interview. \u201cI\u2019m the one who was always trying to keep a tight [lid on the] budget within the opposition so that we don\u2019t spend taxpayers money unnecessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n

Revelakis was vacationing in Greece when Galati defected and was unavailable for comment until she returned to Canada last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason why [Galati] was put aside by [Jean-Claude] Gob\u00e9 was because he was spending too much money because he thought that because he had the position of designated signing authority he was allowed to do anything he wanted in office,\u201d she contended.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why Mr. Gob\u00e9 decided to take him down as designated signing authority and appoint me to take charge of the opposition and the budget,\u201d concluded Revelakis, who represents Chomedey district and took over from Galati to lead the opposition caucus, July 10. \u201c[Galati] was the one who was overspending and not respecting taxpayers\u2019 money.\u201d<\/p>\n

A member of Mayor Demers\u2019 staff told The Suburban<\/i> that he preferred the high road and declined to engage in countering the accusations. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes two to tango, and we don\u2019t want to dance that dance,\u201d Robert-Charles Longpr\u00e9 said in an interview.<\/p>\n

He added that the Mouvement lavallois<\/i> party instead wants to be judged by its actions in governing the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe prefer to be constructive,\u201d he said. \u201cWe were elected to change things and we walk the talk.\u201d <\/p>\n
