Laval\u2019s city councillors met members of Sir Wilfred Laurier School Board (SWLSB) on the softball diamond, Aug. 25, to encourage young people to stay in school and complete their high school studies. <\/p>\n

SWLSB trounced the elected officials 16-6 in the friendly match at Marcel Maheu Park. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Aug. 13, but had to be postponed due to torrential rain that evening. <\/p>\n

Oziano Migliozzi led off the first inning with an inside-the-park home run. <\/p>\n

His father, SWLSB Commissioner Emilio Migliozzi assisted the 13-year-old baseball fanatic, who suffers from Williams Syndrome and sickle cell beta thalassemia\u2014a painful disease that can require hospitalization and surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so important to him. He\u2019s still talking about it,\u201d his father told The Suburban<\/i> afterward. \u201cHe loves baseball and goes to see the Blue Jays play two to three times a year.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe chose SWLSB because it has a very good school for special needs,\u201d he added. \u201cHe was able to attend, because special needs children are exempt from the language restrictions of Bill 101. Many French parents send their special needs children to SWLSB, though I\u2019m unsure whether they know that the exemption permits them to send the special needs child\u2019s siblings to English school as well<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

City councillors also met SWLSB\u2019s French counterpart, the Conseil scolaire de Laval<\/i> (CDSL), in a separate match, Aug. 20. <\/p>\n

The fun-filled outing produced a similarly lopsided score at the conclusion of the lighthearted match: 20-9 in favour of CSDL.
