This month 70 animals a day were found abandoned in rental units (Photo SPCA)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Montreal SPCA is pushing the Quebec government to do away all rules that stop renters from having pets in rental units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is citing the number of ex-friends abandoned every year on moving day, claiming that it is troubling and heart-breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The numbers this month are double the norm, but even on a typical day, 20 animals are abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That number has risen to 70 unwanted animals found in apartments and townhouses and other rental units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPCA executive director Sylvie Bourbonni\u00e8re says that a large majority of Montreal landlords impose major restrictions on pets\u2014some even refusing to rent to residents with pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
