www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\nWith the waters surrounding \u00cele J\u00e9sus rapidly becoming cleaner, Laval intends to bring back the beaches that were once favourite summer escapes for many Montrealers, until effluent and industrial pollutants fouled the rivers surrounding the city in the 1960s.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going ahead with the Mille \u00celes beach in Sainte Rose hopefully,\u201d Abord \u00e0 Plouffe Councilor Vasilios Karidogiannis told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cPlage des baigneurs.<\/i> That\u2019s in the plans for 2015 to coincide with [Laval\u2019s] 50th anniversary celebrations.\u201d<\/p>\n
The city is also considering restoring the former St. Maxime beach in Abord \u00e0 Plouffe, adjacent to the Lachapelle bridge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s in the thought process,\u201d Karidogiannis said in an interview. \u201cA lot of work is going ahead there with the rowing club and we\u2019re looking to integrate it with that project.\u201d<\/p>\n
Karidogiannis first disclosed his dream of restoring Laval\u2019s beaches in a pre-election interview with The Suburban,<\/i> last year.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt takes time,\u201d he conceded. \u201cThere are a lot of plans and finances to consider and we have to make sure that the water is clean.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will have to work with the Commission scolaire de Laval <\/i>on that one, because they own a lot of land around the park and they have a master plan for what is being done at the moment,\u201d he explained. \u201cIt\u2019s in the exploration phase. It\u2019s a big project to undertake.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI have spoken to a lot of residents who have lived in Abord \u00e0 Plouffe for a very long time,\u201d he added. \u201cThey reminisced about how, when they were youngsters, they used to spend Sundays swimming at the beach with their families. They would like it back for their grandchildren\u2014and certainly I would like it for my kids as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Karidogiannis tempered expectations by underscoring that the city doesn\u2019t intend to rush heedlessly headlong into the project.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to do it right,\u201d he insisted. \u201cIt should be attractive and [integrated with] the overall development of the gateway to Laval at the Lachapelle bridge. Tourism Laval is working on something in that respect too.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s consistent with our election promise to put citizens first,\u201d smiled city executive committee vice-chair David de Cotis, \u201cso they can take advantage of opportunities to swim or boat on the river.\u201d<\/p>\n
