DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the gold standard ingredient used in insect mosquito repellents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers say that it now can attract the insects, as they\u2019ve come to associate the chemical with food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Tours Prof. Claudio Lazzari says that until now, scientists believed that repellants worked by blocking the pests\u2019 ability to find humans, or through their unpleasant-smelling nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lazzari says that \u201c…this represents a significant change in understanding repellants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Nina Stanczyk of ETH Z\u00fcrich University says that mosquitoes have been long observed to have \u201cimpressive learning abilities\u201d and are able to \u201cassociate such a strong repellent smell with their food and are then attracted to it afterward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lazzari says the chemical does not lose its effective nature, when used outside in normal conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

University of Florence entomologist Prof. Francesca Romana Dani says that \u201c…although a single mosquito can take multiple blood meals, they do so every few days, so it\u2019s important to evaluate how long the memory of a blood meal taken in the presence of DEET will last.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
