Research from the University of Saskatchewan\u2019s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization will benefit from this. Doctor Neeraj Dhar and his VIDO team are developing organoids\u2014donor tissue engineered in a lab to mimic a variety of organs\u2014which will replace tests on guinea pigs and other animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Animals have different physiologies and \u201c…many therapeutics we develop for humans often fail in the translation stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though his work already represents a new frontier, Dhar is launching organoids into newer domains and chief among them is immunology, where they are primed to make \u201c…amazing breakthroughs in tuberculosis research.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Organoids have existed for some time but only \u201cone or two labs all over the world\u201d are using them to study TB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dhar has been culturing lung organoids sourced from small pieces of human pulmonary tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The novel component in his organoid development is an immune response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
