Jeremy Searle, who is running for Pointe Claire city council in a byelection, on Sunday, April 23, has reiterated highly publicized, controversial comments that he made while serving as a city councilor for Loyola district in Montreal\u2019s Notre Dame de Gr\u00e2ce (NDG) borough, in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candidate denied having told a Cedar-Le Village district resident that \u201cthe Jews kicked me out\u201d of NDG, while campaigning door-to-door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe said it under his breath,\u201d the resident said in an interview, adding that when asked why Searle had moved to Pointe Claire, he leaned closer and said, sotto voce,<\/em> \u201c\u2018Well, you know, those Jews kicked me out.\u2019 That is exactly what I heard. I was speechless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe made some highly inappropriate comments,\u201d the resident said, \u201cbut that one really stuck with me, because I was horrified. He seemed to be mouthing off more than a candidate normally would in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle denied having made the remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, I didn\u2019t say that,\u201d he said, then laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then recalled from his Montreal days \u201ca hate campaign orchestrated by then-mayor Denis Coderre and a radical Jewish group called Chabad who ran a very successful hate campaign against me. All sorts of fake news and so forth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI simply told the rabbi off and told him that we had gotten past all that and that the Jewish guilt argument is old and finished,\u201d he said. \u201cGet over it. It doesn\u2019t matter whether it is Jewish or Iranian or Arabic or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBad developers, people who hate the community have to be taken down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle then added remarks similar to the ones that had proved controversial in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I make the \u2018You can\u2019t use the Jewish guilt argument\u2019 thing,\u201d he said in an interview, April 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 2, 2016, Searle apologized for his previous use of the \u201cJewish guilt\u201d trope:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI made some comments at the last borough council and let me begin by apologizing to those people who I have inadvertently offended: I realized I was painting the entire Jewish community with one brush. It was unfair, offensive and never was my intention.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, outside council, various news outlets at the time quoted him decrying Jews for \u201cbleating\u201d about what he termed \u201cthe global Holocaust\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hate accusations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle speculated about the motives of the Pointe Claire resident whom he is alleged to have told this month that \u201cthe Jews kicked me out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI guess the person you spoke to must be some sort of Jeremy-hater,\u201d Searle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle has accused constituents of hatred before. In 2017, he placed a 4 a.m. call to an NDG voter and left a voicemail message threatening to file a hate-crime complaint against the resident with Montreal police<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle drew a parallel between his relationship with then-borough mayor Russell Copeman and Pointe Claire.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI got hijacked by bunch of journalists, \u2018cause Denis Coderre and Russell Copeman<\/a>\u2014I believe it was Russell Copeman as well, bag carrier sort of guy. Almost as bad as Marvin Rotrand\u2014say anything, do anything for the, for the extra pension, you know?\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, these are, these are political children, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s rather like the current Pointe Claire thing,\u201d Searle continued. \u201cTo spend time dealing with, well, like children like this, with no sense of public service, is not my way to pass half a day. I read the papers. I do the study. I come to conclusions. Which is why they hated me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle said that he is supporting Pointe Claire mayor Tim Thomas \u201c100%. Absolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur system has a certain hierarchy,\u201d he said. \u201cI am quite capable of dealing with four or five children-councilors, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Searle called Pointe Claire Councilor Brent Cowan \u201ca troublemaker\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe appears to be the leader of a group that simply wants to block things,\u201d Searle said. \u201cI\u2019ve tried to figure out why.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is the mayor advancing that I am blocking?\u201d responded Cowan. \u201cIf Jeremy Searle wants to comment on my motivations or what I\u2019m doing, why doesn\u2019t he read my Facebook posts? It\u2019s all there, as well as in the 14-16 articles that I authored in the Pointe Claire Journal<\/em> and in articles in the Montreal Gazette, <\/em>as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Searle says he supports Thomas unreservedly, Searle\u2019s endorsement wasn\u2019t reciprocated. The mayor said in an interview that he instead supports another candidate, Linda De Witt, in the district byelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnyone who googles Jeremy Searle can see who he is,\u201d De Witt said. \u201cIf he claims to have vanquished Cadillac Fairview in another life, he\u2019s taking a lot of credit for a large number of people working in concert.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe group I created at the time had only one member\u2014me\u2014but it\u2019s better to have a name for a group. It was called \u00c0 l\u2019action Montr\u00e9al,\u201d<\/em> Searle recalled. \u201cI stirred up the people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn entitled, spoiled district\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview, early in 2022, Thomas spoke critically of the Cedar-Le Village district in which De Witt is now running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026that\u2019s a difficult district. Oh man, is that difficult. That\u2019s an entitled, spoiled district,\u201d Thomas said in an unsolicited comment at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t agree with that designation, entitled, spoiled,\u201d De Witt responded. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t fit at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said that she has encountered a wide spectrum of opinions, while campaigning door-to-door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome people will say, in regards to the Save the Fairview Forest thing, \u2018Well, you know, at least if there are skyscrapers there, better there than here,\u2019\u201d De Witt recalled. \u201cBut the people who are saying that are not the people living in big houses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decorum and respect desired<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Candidate Lois Butler said that constituents want the bickering on city council to stop and for council members to move forward in a positive manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGoing door-to-door, that is the one solid message that connects every resident in the district,\u201d she reported. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter whom they say they support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe community is very tired of all that they\u2019re hearing and seeing,\u201d Butler said. \u201cWhen I tell them that I want to bring decorum and respect back, they all say: \u2018That\u2019s exactly it!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
