Sensing opportunity, Laval\u2019s formerly fractious opposition leadership has coalesced, in anticipation of a pending court judgment that will determine whether or not Mayor Marc Demers was eligible for office when he was elected, Nov. 3. <\/p>\n

Insiders told The Suburban<\/i> before it went to press that they expect an announcement today that Demers\u2019 most prominent opponents\u2014Robert Bordeleau and Claire le Bel have joined forces with Jean-Claude Gob\u00e9\u2019s Action Laval party, which has formed the official opposition at city council since the election.<\/p>\n

Elections Quebec spokesman Denis Dion confirmed that le Bel has officially requested that her Option Laval party be dissolved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have received the request, we will analyze it and expect to make a ruling [this] week,\u201d he told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cI will probably do the same,\u201d Bordeleau told The Suburban<\/i> in a subsequent interview, about the prospect that his municipal Parti au service du citoyen<\/i> will also head into oblivion. \u201cSince first we met, Mr. Gob\u00e9 and I have held one another in mutual respect. He told me that he found my [proposed] rail transit project quite interesting.\u201d <\/p>\n

Bordeleau nonetheless declined to confirm that a Laval opposition coalition is in the works. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be a natural next step,\u201d he conceded. \u201cThe three of us garnered about 55 per cent of the mayoral vote during last year\u2019s municipal election. We haven\u2019t made a final decision yet.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThat has been the goal that we have been pursuing since we began our term here,\u201d added Action Laval\u2019s chief of staff at city hall Jean Desautels. <\/p>\n

\u201cRight now we\u2019re united in contesting the court case [challenging Demers\u2019 eligibility],\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cWe\u2019re collaborating closely, talking frequently and sharing a lot of information with these people.\u201d <\/p>\n

One municipal councilor, Pierre Anthian, was wrongfooted last week by the unanticipated opposition love-in. <\/p>\n

Anthian announced, Sept. 30, that he had quit Mayor Demers\u2019 Mouvement lavallois<\/i> party and intended to defect to le Bel\u2019s party, only to learn afterward that Option Laval was in the process of being disbanded. <\/p>\n

Bordeleau told The Suburban<\/i> that Anthian was a man of integrity who likely would be welcomed, if an opposition coalition were to be formed.<\/p>\n
