I can\u2019t sleep any longer and I feel ill. I don\u2019t know what I\u2019ll be doing if I get a call,\u201d a Lanaudi\u00e8re region social worker who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal stated in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quebec\u2019s Health and Social Services ministry confirmed that social workers are among the staff whom it contemplates redeploying to lend a hand, if required, in the province\u2019s long-term care facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health Ministry reassured that psychosocial service employees who are sent to seniors homes will do the same work there as in their day-to-day jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTemporarily relocated social workers must offer services akin to those expected of their profession,\u201d Health Ministry spokesman <strong>Robert Maranda<\/strong> replied in an electronic mail message. \u201cAn orientation process is anticipated when personnel are added.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Sad-Kids-Hugging-Mother-768x512-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Sad-Kids-Hugging-Mother-768x512-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Sad-Kids-Hugging-Mother-768x512-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Sad-Kids-Hugging-Mother-768x512-1-720x480.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Child welfare specialists feel unprepared to work with seniors.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI work in a child welfare environment. I studied psychology. I never had any training in physical care, I know absolutely nothing about [senior] clientele!\u201d cried a Laval region social work specialist, who also fears figuring on the call-out list to support the region\u2019s seniors homes, which are among the most COVID-19 ravaged in the province. Asking not to be identified out of fear of retribution, she reminded that she has not had any training in how to move and care for the elderly, or to properly use personal protective equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t believe that I will be obliged to work there, I\u2019m really afraid. I\u2019ll be jeopardizing my health, my safety, and it\u2019s not safe for the elderly either,\u201d she added. \u201cWorking as an orderly is a trade, it\u2019s not something that just anybody can do\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cleaning bedsores, bathing adults, moving confused patients and feeding patients are examples of care which takes training, not to mention the adverse psychological effects of the work, she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, psychologically, I\u2019m not able to change a grandfather\u2019s or a grandmother\u2019s diaper. I\u2019m unable to watch them die. I don\u2019t want to do this work.
