Roland Dick \u00a0(pronounced \u2018deeke\u2019) could find himself sitting at the cabinet table in Ottawa after Oct. 19.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that Roland becomes your representative in Ottawa, that he join the Conservative caucus and be around the cabinet table when important decisions are made,\u201d Small Business Minister Maxime Bernier told reporters during a visit to Laval les \u00celes riding, Sept. 22.<\/p>\n

Bernier was on hand last week to officially open the Conservative communication centre in Chomedey, where the riding continues to attract new volunteers, who now number more than 160, Dick\u2019s campaign manager Ailsa Pehi told The Suburban.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bernier\u2019s visit was the latest in a steady stream of federal cabinet ministers to visit the riding since Prime Minister Stephen Harper kicked off the Conservative\u2019s national campaign in Chomedey last month.<\/p>\n

Niqab ban boosts Conservatives<\/h3>\n

\u201cI witnessed strong support for Roland when I campaigned door-to-door with him,\u201d he said. \u201cWe can feel it. This is not someone whom we have parachuted in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can feel the political wind shifting direction,\u201d Dick agreed. \u201cLaval wants\u00a0change.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Elections Canada data, the\u00a0Conservatives garnered strong support in Chomedey\u2014Laval\u2019s poorest district\u2014during the 2011 election. Poll results last week showed support slipping for the rival\u00a0New Democratic Party (NDP), which had hitherto dominated in the wealthier neighbourhoods in the west and north of Laval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As this week\u2019s edition of The Suburban<\/em> went to press, polls put the Conservative party within reach of another majority government, as some support shifted to the Conservatives in Quebec. The big losers were the NDP. An overwhelming majority of Quebec voters opposed the NDP\u2019s unwavering willingness to let women to cover their face with a niqab during citizenship ceremonies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a Canadian value to preserve the equality of men and women,\u201d Bernier asserted, vowing that the Conservatives will legislate within the first hundred days after it is re-elected. \u201cWe\u2019re the only party that insists on respect, and the public is behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bernier ridiculed local Liberal candidate Fay\u00e7al El Khouri for promising to provide new hospitals and subway stations, if his party forms the next government.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t understand the Canadian constitution,\u201d Bernier observed. \u201cHe wants to take money from Canadians to give to civil servants in Ottawa to run projects that aren\u2019t even under federal jurisdiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bernier also took a poke at Liberal leader Justin Trudeau\u2019s claim that most small businesses are merely a tax dodge for the wealthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an insult to entrepreneurs,\u201d he thundered, praising their contribution to the strength of Laval\u2019s economy. \u201cIt\u2019s discouraging to hear someone who wants to become prime minister say such things. He should be thanking them for creating jobs and wealth and paying their taxes. We\u2019re committed to cutting red tape, lowering taxes and putting more money where it belongs\u2014in Canadians\u2019 pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n
