Last year, Laval\u2019s finest carried three-dozen organs from human donors to surgeons in other cities waiting to implant the organs into waiting recipients. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a list of officers who volunteer to transport organs,\u201d explained Laval Police Sgt. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Jean. \u201cThey traveled some 9,300 km in 2014, to drive the organs\u2014and the surgeons who accompany them\u2014to their destinations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes we also transport the members of the specialized surgical team that will be performing the organ transplant to another city,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

The Canadian Organ Donors Association provides 11 emergency vehicles to police departments across Quebec, including one to Laval. <\/p>\n

\u201cOften they will go to the airport, if the organ is coming from far away,\u201d explained Sgt. Jean, who himself volunteers on the organ transport team. \u201cBut it\u2019s faster to travel by [emergency vehicle] from Laval or Montreal to destinations like Quebec City than to fly there. Last year, I went from Sacr\u00e9 C\u0153ur in Montreal to H\u00f4tel Dieu in Sherbrooke, Quebec. On other occasions, we meet S\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> teams for a handoff in cities like Drummondville or Trois Rivi\u00e8res, depending on how long it took to get the organ.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone has to be ready when the organ is harvested and the receiver is in surgery awaiting its arrival, so everything has to be well-coordinated,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Sgt. Jean urged the public to sign organ donor cards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose organs can save lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\nSchool bus strikes elderly woman<\/b><\/div>\n
\n
<\/b> An 82-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after being struck by a school bus, around 8:15 a.m., April 22. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman was walking on the north side of Cl\u00e9roux with her hood up and the fur covering her head when the westbound bus made a turn off of Cl\u00e9roux,\u201d said Sgt. Jean. \u201cWith the hood up, she didn\u2019t see the bus while crossing the street. It struck her and she fell to the ground and was [afterward] brought to hospital for a possible skull fracture.\u201d<\/p>\n

As this week\u2019s edition of The Suburban<\/i> went to press, the woman was in stable condition and expected to pull through. Neither the driver nor the 19 students aboard the bus suffered any injury. <\/p>\n

Mystery powder triggers lockdown<\/b><\/p>\n

Firefighters evacuated the premises of Algorithme Pharma at 11 a.m., April 22, and decontaminated six employees, after a receptionist opened an envelope containing an unknown powder. <\/p>\n

\u201cTwo people who reported symptoms including headaches and tingling sensations were brought to hospital for treatment,\u201d reported Sgt. Jean. \u201cS\u00fbret\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec<\/i> specialists who came on-scene to take charge of the suspicious envelope and reported the following day, that while the exact nature of the substance remained under analysis, it was deemed to be non-toxic.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s too early to determine a motive for the incident,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n<\/a><\/div>\n
\nLaval\u2019s specialized organ-transport emergency vehicle traveled 9,300 km last year.<\/b><\/div>\n
