Laval Police intercepted a car driving 107 km\/h on the Highway 440 service road, Sept. 17, where the speed limit is 70 km\/h. <\/p>\n

“When the officer stopped the vehicle, he saw the woman in the passenger seat trying to resuscitate a chihuahua,\u201d Const. Franco di Genova told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cHe took note of the driver\u2019s permit and then escorted the couple to the Laval veterinary hospital.\u201d <\/p>\n

The officer then gave a couple a $258 speeding ticket.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n\u201cIt\u2019s a question of where you draw the line,\u201d Const. di Genova explained.<\/div>\n
\n
The chihuahua did not survive.<\/p><\/div>\n
\nConst. di Genova noted that the k911transport.com<\/a> animal ambulance service is available 24-hours-a-day to pet owners in Laval, Montreal and the surrounding region. <\/p>\n

Police dogs exempted<\/b>
\n
<\/b>However, K911 co-owner Rodney McLean told The Suburban<\/i> that Transport Quebec won\u2019t let him exceed the speed limit, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been trying to get them to allow us to go a little faster with the emergency lights on when we need to get to a veterinary hospital in a life-threatening emergency,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cWe\u2019ve even been pulled over for using a bus lane. There\u2019s one exception: If we\u2019re transporting a police officer\u2019s dog, we have carte blanche to travel as fast as we can to save its life.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe met Transport Minister Robert Po\u00ebti and he basically said that animals are like goods: they don\u2019t have any more value than what you pay for them,\u201d McLean said. \u201cAnimals also serve as seeing eye dogs and help people with autism, for example. They play an important role in our lives and their value needs to be recognized by our society.\u201d <\/p>\n

He added that K911, which has transported thousands of animals since it was founded, seven years ago, has contracts with all Laval and Montreal veterinary hospitals and is currently in talks with the city of Laval. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe already remove hurt or deceased wildlife for some municipalities and would like to do so for Laval,\u201d McLean said. \u201cIt\u2019s a big territory where deer at the side of the road pose a potential hazard to drivers.\u201d
