Laval Police stumbled onto a new phenomenon when they arrested two youths for drug possession.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe officers were on patrol in Chomedey when they spotted two 19-year-olds smoking marijuana in a parking lot,\u201d Sgt. Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Jean told The Suburban.<\/em> \u201cThe car that they were in was quite untidy, so the first question that they asked the pair was: \u2018Do you have any other drugs in\u00a0the car?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cOne of the suspects handed over\u00a0a bag of gummy bears,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cAt first the officer thought that it was a joke or because the suspect was drugged, but subsequent analysis revealed that they did in fact have THC in them.\u201d<\/p>\n

THC is tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. The accidental discovery set off alarm bells, because it appears to have until now flown under the radar of Canadian drug investigators and is\u00a0designed to appeal to young children. \u201cWe have found synthetic drugs like methamphetamine, and ecstasy that has been manufactured in tablet form to look like candy, but this is the first time that it is actually candy,\u201d\u00a0Sgt. Jean reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIf a nine-year-old were to eat a\u00a0cannabis-laced gummy bear, he would get sick from the THC,\u201d he warned. \u201cThe police service is quite concerned that drugs are available in\u00a0that form.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you make it in the shape\u00a0of a teddy bear, it looks quite innocuous,\u201d he added. \u201cThe patrol officers seized gummy bears in two shades of yellow, red, and two shades of green, which indicates that at least five batches were made. It\u2019s a sophisticated way to hide drug use.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laval Police have sent the seized gummy bears for more detailed laboratory analysis.<\/p>\n
