{"id":6113,"date":"2015-08-03T16:58:45","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T16:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newscoverage.org\/?p=6113"},"modified":"2015-08-03T16:58:45","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T16:58:45","slug":"highway-440-renamed-for-first-mayor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2015\/08\/03\/highway-440-renamed-for-first-mayor\/","title":{"rendered":"Highway 440 renamed for first mayor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Wingding Thursday for Laval 50th<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a href=\"www.thesuburban.com\">By Robert Frank<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Centropolis is the place to be Thursday\u00a0evening, as Laval pulls out all the stops to mark the city\u2019s semicentennial.<\/p>\n<p>The party will cap a day of celebration of the date fifty years ago, when provincial Municipal Affairs Minister Pierre Laporte welded all 14 municipalities on \u00cele J\u00e9sus into the single city of Laval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be a full day of events,\u201d executive committee vice-chairman David de Cotis told\u00a0<em>The Suburban.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thursday morning, Francine Charbonneau\u2014the provincial cabinet minister responsible for Laval\u2014is expected to kick off the festivities by officially announcing that Highway 440, which spans the city, will be baptised the Jean-No\u00ebl Lavoie highway. The province will redub the road in honour of the former mayor of Abord \u00e0 Plouffe, then Chomedey, who became Laval\u2019s first mayor on Aug. 6, 1965.<\/p>\n<p>Around 5 p.m., the current mayor Marc Demers, will welcome Charbonneau and a coterie of VIPs to city hall for a\u00a0<em>vin d\u2019honneur\u00a0<\/em>to mark he occasion.<\/p>\n<p>The dignitaries plan to make their way to Centropolis around 7 p.m., where <em>Cirque \u00c9loise<\/em> will entertain visitors before Mayor Demers cuts a giant, commemorative cake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re planning to serve 5,000 people cake,\u201d de Cotis explained, \u201cfollowed by an 8 p.m. concert featuring internationally renowned soprano Marie-Jos\u00e9e Lord and the Laval Symphony Orchestra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, at 9:30 p.m., the classical virtuosos will cede the stage to a ramped-up version of\u00a0<em>Insula:\u00a0<\/em>the crescendo of a custom-made show that welds water, laser-light and music to illuminate how Laval evolved over the centuries into a cosmopolitan city that is currently on the cusp of becoming Quebec\u2019s second largest metropolis.<\/p>\n<p>Jets fire a 60-metre (200 ft) wall of water into the air, which will serve as a backdrop for animation, lasers light and imagery that will depict the story of Laval.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Jean-No\u00ebl-Lavoie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6114\" src=\"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Jean-No\u00ebl-Lavoie-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Jean-No\u00ebl Lavoie\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Jean-No\u00ebl Lavoie\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wingding Thursday for Laval 50th By Robert Frank Centropolis is the place to be Thursday\u00a0evening, as Laval pulls out all the stops to mark the city\u2019s semicentennial.
