Quebec government statistics show that\u2014among the province\u2019s cities\u2014Laval spends the least\u2014by far\u2014on arts and culture.<\/p>\n

According to the Quebec Statistics Institute, Laval spends just $12.95 a year per citizen on culture. The average Quebec municipality spends $122.34 a year.<\/p>\n

Though it is the province\u2019s third-largest city, Laval\u2019s spending is infinitesimal, compared to the only two more-populous cities.<\/p>\n

Montreal devotes more than double the provincial average, $281.64, to culture, and the provincial capital of Quebec City leads municipal culture spending at $342.01 per capita\u2014almost 25 times Laval\u2019s commitment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re definitely aware of the situation and are quite distressed by it,\u201d Mayor Marc Demers\u2019 spokesman Fran\u00e7ois Brochu told The Suburban.<\/em><\/p>\n

The city has already taken significant steps to redress the situation, and plans to take more, he said in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cAge, origin no barrier\u201d<\/h3>\n

Last month, Laval announced that it has made a commitment to subsidize the Quebec Arts and Letters Council (CALQ) to the tune of $50,000 a year for the next\u00a0three years to develop and promote art and literature in Laval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cLaval has made an unwavering commitment to support artistic expression here,\u201d Mayor Demers said at the time. \u201cOur artists help give a soul to our city and drive our sense of identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Quebec Culture Minister H\u00e9l\u00e8ne David, who is also responsible for the Office qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois de la langue fran\u00e7aise,<\/em> agreed to match the city\u2019s $50,000 annual subsidy, bringing the total municipal and provincial government commitment for the three-year project to $300,000.<\/p>\n

The province and the city agreed that the project will \u201ccontribute to the growth and promotion of artists and writers of all ages and origin.\u201d<\/p>\n

They have until Oct. 5 to propose projects to CALQ. Information about how to go about doing so is available on a helpful English-language web page at: www.calq.gouv.qc.ca\/index_en.htm<\/a><\/p>\n

Nowhere to go but up<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This is just the beginning, Brochu vowed.<\/p>\n

He said that Laval has committed to ramp up support for writers and artists and their professional organizations.<\/p>\n

He declined though to specify how much more the city will allocate to culture initiatives this Fall, when it council tables the 2016 municipal budget.<\/p>\n
