Extreme weather has hindered produce production on \u00cele J\u00e9sus so far this season.<\/p>\n

In the wake of one of the coldest winters in a century, Mother Nature hit Laval\u2019s agribusiness industry\u2014an oft-forgotten but nonetheless significant contributor to the city\u2019s economy\u2014with a one-two punch: a frigid April, followed by the warmest May on record.<\/p>\n

The fickle climate has affected small and large producers alike.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe weather has been rough,\u201d acknowledged Productions Margiric marketing director Mario Cloutier. \u201cEarly growers like\u00a0romaine and lettuce are all done. Right now we\u2019ve moved on to broccoli, cauliflower, celery and field cucumbers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been extremely rough,\u201d he affirmed. \u201cVegetables grow through the night and with warm temperatures of 10-12 degrees, they didn\u2019t grow as rapidly as they were supposed to. That has really affected volume.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDemand is outstripping what I can supply,\u201d Cloutier said. \u201cIt\u2019s a nightmare for the chain stores and it\u2019s a nightmare for me as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that it remains to be seen how this month\u2019s weather will affect the harvest of July produce like green peppers and cantaloupes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hoping that summer\u00a0temperatures will arrive soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Margiric (www.margiric.com<\/a>), owned by the Gibouleau family, is a big player in Quebec\u2019s agribusiness industry. It is the biggest owner-operated farm in Canada, and supplies fresh produce to the big supermarket chains like Loblaws, M\u00e9tro, IGA, Provigo and\u00a0Sauv\u00e9, including stores in Laval.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of them,\u201d Cloutier affirmed. \u201cWe\u2019re the largest family-owned\u00a0vegetable grower in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The non-profit organization Saveurs de Laval<\/em> provides a handy guide in English on its website www.saveursdelaval.com<\/a> to places on \u00cele J\u00e9sus where you can buy\u2014or pick for yourself\u2014locally\u00a0grown produce and flowers.<\/p>\n
