{"id":5859,"date":"2015-06-03T18:11:56","date_gmt":"2015-06-03T18:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/?p=5859"},"modified":"2015-06-04T18:18:59","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T18:18:59","slug":"laval-gets-massive-girder-contract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2015\/06\/03\/laval-gets-massive-girder-contract\/","title":{"rendered":"Laval gets massive girder contract"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b><i>Canam to construct components for new Champlain Bridge<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>By Robert Frank<\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Laval will reap the benefits of the federal government commitment to replace the Champlain bridge by 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The St. Lawrence Group consortium has tapped Canam Bridges to manufacture steel beams that will make up the superstructure of the new bridge in Montreal to link with the South Shore.<\/p>\n<p>While senior vice-president Robin Lapointe declined to specify how much money Canam will earn from this commitment, he acknowledged that the amounts that it will entail are very significant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a huge contract,\u201d he told <i>The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of secondary girders and braces in a bridge that spans more than 3.4 km,\u201d Lapointe said in a telephone interview. \u201cOur plant in Laval has the equipment and the expertise to do that kind of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company already employs some 80 people at the plant that it has operated here since 2006, when it bought Goodco and Ztech and merged them into a single company. It also operates a bridge building plant in Quebec City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe extra work that this project will bring means that we will have to hire another 25-30 employees in Laval for a two-year period,\u201d Lapointe predicted. \u201cThe work will start early next year.\u201d More money on horizon<\/p>\n<p>More money might be coming Canam\u2019s way from the Champlain project.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s plant, located on Marshall Street in Laval\u2019s industrial district, specializes in making structural bearings and expansion joints.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey weren\u2019t part of this package, but we are working on a proposal to provide bearings and expansion joints in the near future,\u201d Lapointe concluded, hopeful that Canam will also be the successful bidder on that portion of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Laval executive committee vice-chairman David De Cotis told <i>The Suburban<\/i> that he welcomed the news of the coming boost to the city\u2019s already-strong employment figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaval has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the province,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cThis is another example of how our employment growth continues to be driven by private sector vendors.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5862\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/new-champlain-bridge-design.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5862\" class=\"wp-image-5862 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/new-champlain-bridge-design-300x160.jpg\" alt=\"new-champlain-bridge-design\" width=\"300\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Laval to profit from gigaproject.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canam to construct components for new Champlain Bridge By Robert Frank www.thesuburban.com Laval will reap the benefits of the federal government commitment to replace the Champlain bridge by 2018.
