Chief Pierre Brochet has hired seven new police officers form a new crimefighting team called Equinox. The aim, he said during an interview last week, is to send a message to Laval criminals. <\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the objectives is to reduce violent acts in public places like bars,\u201d Brochet told The Suburban.<\/i> <\/p>\n

\u201cOrganized crime is entrenched in a variety of locations, including various bars in Laval,\u201d added Assistant Chief Serge Gaignard. <\/p>\n

Brochet said that Laval has been successful in responding to crime and at teaming up with police elsewhere. He cited simultaneous drug busts in Chomedey and in the Laurentians, April 30, as an example of cross-jurisdictional collaboration by the intermunicipal Combined Regional Squad team (see accompanying report<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe work very well at the higher and middle levels of crimefighting like this,\u201d he observed. \u201cThe next level is to work the street.\u201d Equinox, he continued, is a new, in-your-face message to criminals that will help to beef up crime prevention at the local level. \u201cWe want [our police officers] to be visible on the street where criminals are,\u201d Brochet explained, \u201cespecially where there is violence and organized crime prevails.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
\u201cIt\u2019s part of our plan to address growing incidence of big-city crime,\u201d he said of Laval\u2019s burgeoning population. \u201cIt\u2019s a real issue for Laval. With a city of our size, you develop big-city problems. The population will continue to increase significantly and Laval\u2019s downtown will keep on growing. So we have to focus on prevention.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cEquinox is a specialized team that is definitely part of that plan,\u201d Brochet said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re involved in organized crime\u2014especially if you\u2019re violent\u2014you can expect to see the Equinox squad,\u201d he vowed. \u201cWe\u2019ll be looking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
