{"id":522,"date":"2014-11-12T17:21:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-12T17:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2014\/11\/12\/laval-schoolchildren-to-ride-electric\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:40:48","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:40:48","slug":"laval-schoolchildren-to-ride-electric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2014\/11\/12\/laval-schoolchildren-to-ride-electric\/","title":{"rendered":"Laval schoolchildren to ride electric school bus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">By Robert Frank<\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seatbelts, everyone!<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the Quebec government rolled out what it termed \u201cthe first school bus in the world powered exclusively by electricity\u201d during a news conference in Laval. <\/p>\n<p>Within the next few months, school bus operator Chartrand Inc. plans to start using the prototype, 72-seat school bus to carry <i>Commission scolaire de Laval<\/i> schoolchildren to-and-from classes.<\/p>\n<p>Provincial Energy Minister David Heurtel told reporters that each battery-powered bus will slash greenhouse gas emissions by 23 tonnes a year, compared to diesel powered buses.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>\n\u201cThe Quebec government picked up 60 percent of the $1.1 million spent to develop the project,\u201d he said, \u201cin other words $675,000.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil now, all electric school buses have been converted from diesel vehicles,\u201d National Advanced Transportation Centre CEO Sylvain Castonguay told <i style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cThis is first purpose-built electric model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that he hopes that the technology can eventually be applied to commercial trucks, as well. <\/p>\n<p>At more than $200,000 per vehicle, the buses cost twice the price of their diesel-powered counterparts. However Castonguay expects that operators will save more than that during the more than a dozen years that each electric school bus is expected to last. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt costs in the order $3,000 per year to operate compared with some $12,000 per year for a similar, fossil-fuel powered vehicle,\u201d he explained in an interview. \u201cThere are also fewer moving parts, which ought to entail less maintenance.
