The National Assembly quietly closed the final coda to the Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois\u2019<\/i> much-reviled values charter last week. <\/p>\n

During a meeting Tuesday evening, Nov. 18, the legislature\u2019s little-known Committee on Institutions ruled against a request to make public all the as-yet undisclosed submissions to the commission that the previous Pauline Marois government had set up to permit citizens to provide their comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe committee had received a request for all of the factums that were filed but were not presented because of the election,\u201d committee member Gilles Ouimet, who represents the Laval riding of Fabre, told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, the committee decided unanimously to decline the request,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cAccording to the rules of the National Assembly, the memoranda belong to their authors until they\u2019re presented in a public hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe felt that we didn\u2019t have the authority to change that rule,\u201d Ouimet added.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Nov. 20, Ouimet proposed another motion in the Quebec legislature that will affect the Quebec Bar Association.<\/p>\n

The amendment will extend the duration of the term of the head of the bar\u2014known as the b\u00e2tonnier\u2014to two years, with the possibility of extending it another two years.<\/p>\n

Prior to his election, Ouimet had himself served in that position as b\u00e2tonnier.
