The Agence m\u00e9tropolitaine de transport (AMT) inaugurated a nother train station last week, as the Train de l\u2019est<\/i> nears completion.<\/p>\n

St. Michel-Montr\u00e9al Nord Station will welcome its first riders, Dec. 1, and is the second city station (with St. L\u00e9onard-Montreal Nord) to be inaugurated on the Mascouche-Downtown line in the past month.<\/p>\n

Work on the station began in August 2013. Located at the corner of Industrial and Pie IX boulevards, the building features an elevator for easy access to the platform, a drop-off spot and racks to accommodate 84 bicycles.<\/p>\n

\nFour STM buses will serve the station, which will also offer incentive parking for 140 cars next year.<\/p>\n

The $671 million Train de l\u2019est<\/i> is expected to carry 5,500 passengers per peak period, 30 per cent of whom currently use their car, according to the AMT. The route is expected to take 29 minutes from Mascouche to Central station with 11 stops in between.<\/p>\n

\nThat means a lot fewer cars on the road and less traffic, but it\u2019s more than that, says Montreal North borough Mayor Gilles Deguire. \u201cWe have a huge revitalization project for Pie IX Boulevard,\u201d he says, which includes public transit and sustainable urban development. \u201cThese projects are directly related to the arrival of the train and rapid bus service (SRB). Our vision also includes the development and greening o f public spaces on a human scale. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s the point, says AMT CEO Nicolas Girard. \u201cA new public transit service offers added value for a neighborhood or district.
