One in twelve Laval residents drinks so much that they put their health at serious risk, Laval\u2019s regional health authority told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/i>\u201cWe\u2019re pushing prevention,\u201d Lalie B\u00e9langer-Dion said in an interview. \u201cIt\u2019s better to prevent drinking from becoming a big problem than to try to fix it, once it does.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOn \u00cele J\u00e9sus, 82.4 per cent of the population partakes in alcohol,\u201d explained B\u00e9langer-Dion, who is responsible for fight against substance abuse file at Laval\u2019s Agence de sant\u00e9 et services sociaux.<\/i> (ASSS Laval) \u201cA tenth of them are problem drinkers.\u201d <\/p>\n

Booze takes a terrible toll, she said. It can cause cancer, high blood pressure, cirrhosis and pancreatitis. <\/p>\n

\u201cExcessive drinking is not simply a health problem,\u201d she added. \u201cIt also has a profound effect on the drinker\u2019s loved ones.\u201d <\/p>\n

It can lead to violence, family strife as well professional and financial problems, she said.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
ASSS Laval is encouraging residents who think that they might have a drinking problem to call their help line [450] 627-2530.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe phone number is not just for alcohol dependence,\u201d B\u00e9langer-Dion explained. \u201cIt\u2019s also there to provide help for the problem drinker\u2019s family. For example, women or children who are concerned that their father or husband consumes too much, and doesn\u2019t know what to do about it can call us.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s also for people who are living through other kinds of psychosocial problems,\u201d she continued. \u201cViolence, depression or suicidal thoughts, for example. Anyone who isn\u2019t doing well in general.\u201d <\/p>\n

The health authority www.lavalensante.com<\/a> has published guidelines to help Laval residents know their limits:<\/p>\n

At least two days a week should remain alcohol-free, to avoid becoming dependent. <\/p>\n

Both men and women should avoid drinking more than two glasses a day.<\/p>\n

Women should never consume more than three glasses at one sitting and should not drink more than ten glasses per week. <\/p>\n

Men should never consume more than four glasses at one sitting and should not drink more than 15 glasses per week.
