{"id":419,"date":"2014-12-10T22:02:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-10T22:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2014\/12\/10\/transit-authority-testing-demi-bus\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:40:44","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:40:44","slug":"transit-authority-testing-demi-bus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2014\/12\/10\/transit-authority-testing-demi-bus\/","title":{"rendered":"Transit authority testing demi-bus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Robert Frank<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t be surprised if you see a half-size bus plying Laval streets this week. <i>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Laval<\/i> (STL) is testing a 27.5 ft motor coach to see whether it is suited for local use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bus is a Vicinity model, manufactured by Grande West Transportation,\u201d explained STL chairman David de Cotis. \u201cIt accommodates 23 people and is relatively spacious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He told <i style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">The Suburban<\/i> that the city\u2019s public transit authority wants to find out whether using smaller buses might be more efficient for some routes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, STL\u2019s 40-foot buses go around Laval half-empty at times,\u201d said de Cotis, who also city councilor for St. Bruno district and serves as vice-chairman of the city\u2019s powerful executive committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides permitting us to offer better service, the smaller buses consume less fuel and therefore emit less pollution and cost less to acquire and operate than bigger busses,\u201d he observed. \u201cWe also have to consider that he average lifespan of the larger buses is 15-20 years, though. For the smaller buses, the average lifespan is usually 7-10 years.
