\nOn Friday, students at D\u00e9mosth\u00e8ne Greek elementary school in
\nChomedey were asked to dig into their small pockets to support patients at Ste.
\nJustine children\u2019s hospital, to contribute to Hellenic Social Services of
\nQuebec\u2019s annual Christmas drive.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe generosity that we see is incredible,\u201d said the
\nschool\u2019s principal, Matrona Mavrakis. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThis is the first year that students made $5 donations to
\nthe children\u2019s hospital in return for getting to trade their light blue and navy
\nuniform for whatver clothes they want to wear.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThose who gave $5 to Ste. Justine were also allowed to light
\na candle on the hospital\u2019s Christmas tree. Children who made donations were also
\ngiven a light bulb to decorate and hang on a tree by the school\u2019s main entrance.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe school is also in the middle of a Christmas fundraising
\ndrive run by the HSSQ with other Socrates-D\u00e9mosth\u00e8ne campuses.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nUnder the same Christmas tree, children can leave new or
\nwell-kept toys, wrapped up and marked with the gender and age group of the intended
\nrecipient. Schools are also collecting loonies, toonies and canned foods.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a sense of pride that they\u2019re able to help other
\nchildren and families within our community,\u201d said Mavrakis. \u201cWe try to
\ncommunicate that it could be your neighbor, it could be another child in your
\nclass.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nIt helps bring meaning to the idea of Christmas as a
\ncharitable season, to help those less fortunate which, as reported in The Suburban,<\/i><\/a> is
\nnot uncommon in Laval.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe Ste. Justine drive is new this year because one of the
\nstaff members was personally touched.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s the first year that I have time to breathe,\u201d said
\nsecond-grade teacher Isabelle Roy. Her daughter Juliette was diagnosed with
\ndevelopmental malformations in her brain two-and-a-half years ago and has been
\ngoing to Ste. Justine\u2019s for regular check-ups ever since.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nRoy said she\u2019s always explained the situation to students
\nand parents, who know about her daughter\u2019s illness, and organized the
\nfundraiser for the first time this year.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThey\u2019re so happy to contribute,\u201d she said about the
\nstudents. \u201cAs soon as they arrived, they took off their coats and ran over to
\nme.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nWhen The Suburban<\/i>
\nmet with Roy, she had only had time to count half of the donations in
\nclassrooms, which so far added up to almost $500.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\u201cThey\u2019re aware that it could be them who falls ill and is in
\nneed of hospital care,\u201d Roy said.<\/div>\n
