Abord \u00e0 Plouffe Councillor Vasilios Karidogiannis doesn\u2019t conceal his pride in getting the city to move forward on building 226 units of much-needed social housing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe intent is to demolish all the old buildings and build modern ones free of mould, which has already forced the demolition of half of them,\u201d he told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

Preliminary plans are already taking shape, with construction to move into high gear in 2016, Karidogiannis explained, adding that the city will use the project to solve perennial water runoff problems on Notre Dame, between 100th and Chomedey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWork will start on the Abord \u00e0 Plouffe side and make its way to the Souvenir-Labelle side across the street from Notre Dame.<\/p>\n

Abord \u00e0 Plouffe will also see $25 million in overdue infrastructure work in 2015, 10 percent of the capital investment budget that city council passed last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of that has to do with infrastructure,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cWhen the mayor called me into his office to discuss my ideas for Laval\u2019s three-year plan, I told him that my number-one priority was to get the plumbing right. The area has long had drainage problems. If there\u2019s a torrential rainfall, the whole street floods.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nIn addition, the city will modernize the district\u2019s water filtration plant, which serves the west end of Laval.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be rebuilding the plant inside and out,\u201d Karidogiannis reported. \u201cFiltration systems, security systems and monitoring systems: The whole facility will be rebuilt from A to Z to supply better, safer water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tenders have already been issued for a beautification project on \u00cele Paton.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany elderly people live there,\u201d he observed. \u201cPromenade Paton is the centrepiece of the island. The central mall will get a makeover, redoing the street with decorative lighting. Citizens have been asking for that for some time and they will get it in 2015. Construction is slated to start in the spring.<\/p>\n

Other projects include adding an elevator to make Centre Jean-Paul Campeau more accessible to the elderly and handicapped. The improvement will make it easier for them to use the major community centre, which serves Abord \u00e0 Plouffe and Chomedey residents.<\/p>\n
