{"id":401,"date":"2014-12-17T17:33:00","date_gmt":"2014-12-17T17:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2014\/12\/17\/cyclobus-ridership-near-double-in-2014\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:40:43","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:40:43","slug":"cyclobus-ridership-near-double-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2014\/12\/17\/cyclobus-ridership-near-double-in-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"CycloBus ridership near double in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">By Robert Frank<\/b><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\" style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, more than 2,300 people used the Cyclobus service,\u201d Laval transit authority chair David de Cotis told The Suburban. \u201cIt has grown more and more popular since its introduction in 2012.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>That figure is almost double the 1,300-plus riders who used the service in 2013, when all Laval buses were equipped with front-mounted bike-racks. <\/p>\n<p>When a bus arrives, cyclists merely indicate to the driver that they intend to use the rack and are directed by the driver to install the bike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allows people to combine public transportation with the city\u2019s bike paths and encourages them to drive cars less,\u201d enthused Decotis, who also serves as vice-chair of the city\u2019s executive committee. \u201cThe result? They\u2019re in better shape, breathe fresh air and reduce their carbon footprint. It\u2019s an economic, environment-friendly and expeditious form of transportation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He announced during the interview that next year commuters will once again be able to take their bicycles aboard city buses.<\/p>\n<p><b>Three-season service<\/b><\/p>\n<div>\n<b><br \/><\/b>\u201cThe season will start May 1 and end Oct. 31,\u201d de Cotis said. \u201cWe received a number of requests for us to prolong the CycloBus season, but unfortunately we can\u2019t. The law says that when it gets dark at night, you can\u2019t put a bicycle on a CycloBus.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven offering the service until the end of October is pushing the limit,\u201d de Cotis added, \u201cbecause the days grow shorter, which makes it difficult to maintain service.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He noted that Laval already keeps 175 km of bike paths open from Apr. 15-Nov. 14. According to STL, more than one if four cyclists (27%) start pedaling in April and nearly one in seven (15%) are still doing so during November. <\/p>\n<p>The program began with a 2012 pilot project, and was extended to all 44 Laval bus routes in 2013. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe received no complaints and there were no incidents in 2013 or 2014,\u201d <i>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de transport de Laval<\/i> (STL) ceo Guy Picard said in a statement, in which he extolled CycloBus\u2019 ease of use, user-friendliness and accessibility. <\/p>\n<p>He attributed STL\u2019s success in nearly doubling CycloBus participation this year to an active promotion campaign.
