Ten North Star Academy students learned how to respect the environment, during a seminar conducted last week by Leave No Trace. <\/p>\n

A national charity, www.leavenotrace.ca<\/a> is based in Ste. Rose. It works through research and partnerships and emphasizes education, teaching how to help minimize the impact that humans leave on the wilderness, \u201cone person at a time.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThey spent an hour and a half with the young people, Dec. 8,\u201d Marina Robinson, a teacher at the Chomedey school, told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

The students learned how to be respectful of the wilderness when they\u2019re outdoors. <\/p>\n

\u201cLeave No Trace taught them seven principles to abide by and conducted a number of activities,\u201d she said. \u201cThey were also given different commonplace items and asked to place them in the order of how long it will take them to break down in nature and which would have the biggest impact on the environment.\u201d <\/p>\n

The principles are:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Plan ahead and prepare
\n\u2022 Travel and camp on durable surfaces
\n\u2022 Dispose of waste properly
\n\u2022 Leave what you find
\n \u2022 Minimize campfire impact
\n\u2022 Respect wildlife <\/p>\n

\u201cA few students at a time were given a principle and each group in turn had to make up a skit to illustrate it,\u201d Robinson added. <\/p>\n

The students were all members of North Star Academy\u2019s wildlife environment group, and comprised students from all grades from Secondary I-V.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey really liked it, especially the younger ones,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cThey found it informative.\u201d <\/p>\n

Leave No Trace Canada was founded in Laval nearly six years ago. It has a national mandate in Canada and is affiliated with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics<\/a> in Boulder, Colorado.<\/p>\n
