The Communaut\u00e9 m\u00e9tropolitaine de Montr\u00e9al<\/i> (CMM) is picking up almost half the tab to launch the new beach to be built in the city\u2019s East End. <\/p>\n

The borough of Rivi\u00e8re des Prairies-Pointe aux Trembles is getting $400,000 in funding from the council\u2014chaired by Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre\u2014for its Plage de l\u2019est,<\/i> whose first phase kicks off next summer.<\/p>\n

With a total budget estimated at $908,000, the first phase includes construction of a lighted walkway winding slowly down to the river, and a wooden pier, integrated into the landscape with a lookout offering views of the St. Lawrence River. The restoration of the shoreline, construction of a natural-looking rocky beach and a floating dock, as well as exterior lighting, street furniture and plants are also planned. Later phases\u2014in 2016\u2014include construction of a service building, two sports fields and a water play-park which will give way to a skating rink in winter.<\/p>\n

Located near the eastern tip of the island at 94th Avenue and Bellerive along the St. Lawrence River, the beach project was conceived in 2013 and is at the heart of a regional plan to exploit the environmental and recreational tourism potential of Montreal\u2019s shorelines and green spaces.
