English Montreal School Board commissioner and attorney Patricia Lattanzio has been elected chairman of the Comit\u00e9 de gestion de la taxe scolaire de l\u2019\u00eele de Montr\u00e9al<\/i> (CGTSIM), the first anglophone representative to hold the post. <\/p>\n

Composed of representatives from the five Montreal island public school boards the CGTSIM imposes and collects school taxes from property owners on the territory; distributes income earned from investments to schools in underprivileged areas; takes out loans and meets the cash flow needs of the member boards. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of the provincial government\u2019s budgetary cuts, austerity measures and the restructuring of school boards, the Comit\u00e9 will undoubtedly play a pivotal role and serve as a model,\u201d said Lattanzio, adding, \u201cmany people know of the Comit\u00e9\u2019s role as a tax collector, but in fact, it is a central manager of the taxes collected and does a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lattanzio is serving the second term on the EMSB council of commissioners, and currently sits on the St. L\u00e9onard borough\u2019s Planning Advisory Committee.
