www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\nOn Rock Community Services recently\u00a0announced its new mission statement\u00a0to eliminate hunger in the West\u00a0Island of Montreal. This month they announced\u00a0their annual spring food drive\u00a0in an effort to prepare for the lean\u00a0months ahead at their food bank.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople don\u2019t think of giving when the\u00a0sun is out and the sky is blue,\u201d Kim Reid,\u00a0founder of On Rock and father of three\u00a0told The Suburban,<\/i> \u201cI like to get prepared\u00a0for the summer months when we\u00a0simply don\u2019t have enough to go around.\u201d<\/p>\n
Each and every week On Rock feeds\u00a0more than 200 West Island families and\u00a0countless lunches to local elementary\u00a0schools. According to Reid it takes a\u00a0community to feed the hungry. On Rock\u00a0receives food through donations from\u00a0Moisson Montreal that distributes food\u00a0to all food banks, as well as private companies and individual donors.<\/p>\n
The annual food drive needs include all non-perishable foods such as canned goods, peanut butter, tuna and pasta. Items can be delivered to the food bank or pick up can be arranged through the website.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we happen to have an overstock we share our good fortune with a smaller food bank in Vaudreuil-Dorion,\u201d Reid said.<\/p>\n
The annual cost in rent alone of the warehouse space behind a strip mall on Gouin is $100,000.<\/p>\n
Reid often deals with what he calls emergency situations, when a family is out of food and needs help immediately. A box is prepared that can last a family about three days depending on what On Rock has in stock in terms of food. Often the food received is not prime produce so it must be consumed in short order.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a 50\/50 chance whether a family will come to us and become regular customers,\u201d he explained, \u201cif they are lucky it is just a temporary situation until the family can get back on their feet.\u201d<\/p>\n
When asked what Reid sees for the future of On Rock he answered, \u201cI don\u2019t plan, I wait to see the needs of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tickets are on sale for On Rock\u2019s eighth annual wine tasting and food pairing event that will take place on June 6, at A Ma Baie Cultural Center located at 9665 Gouin Ouest, Pierrefonds.<\/p>\n
