Seven athletes, including new Montreal West residents the Dufour-Lapointe sisters<\/a>, will make a pitch on Dragon\u2019s Den tonight<\/a>. If they succeed, it could be a big boon to Canadian athletes who are starved of resources.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt came to me on the flight home from Sochi,\u201d smiled Sandy Wolofsky, who spearheaded publicity for Canada\u2019s freestyle skiers durng last year\u2019s Winter Olympics in Russia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were the world\u2019s most successful freestyle ski team and the most successful sports federation in the Canadian Olympic Association, but we had no sponsorships,\u201d recalled Wolofsky, The Suburban\u2019s<\/i> former Moscow correspondent, who witnessed and reported on the Soviet Union\u2019s 1992 collapse.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanadian Freestyle Skiing\u2019s ceo, Peter Judge, said go for it,\u201d she said of the Dragon\u2019s Den project. \u201cHe believed in me and said \u2018It\u2019s your ship. Run it.\u2019 So I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pitch entails working in partnership,\u201d Wolofsky explained. \u201cWe\u2019re offering the world\u2019s best athletes: Appearances in exchange for cooperation. Wearing your logo on our clothing, which will be seen everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBesides the exposure,\u201d she added, \u201cwe invited them to become part of the world of healthy, outdoorsy, hip youth and to be seen in the light of the coolness of their modern-day life. \u201cIf it works, it could represent a sea change in Canadian amateur sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolofsky credited her initiative to her experience in Russia, \u201cwhere you have to learn how to deal and to fight and to stick to your convictions when you know that something is good and right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt taught me how to how to accomplish something despite the many obstacles in your way, through sheer, full-momentum tenacity,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

To find out how the athletes fared on Dragon Den<\/a>, you\u2019ll have to tune in tonight.<\/p>\n
