Though Quebecers might abhor abrogating freedom of speech, the language police remain tireless in their pursuit of Swiss Vienna Pastry\u2019s harmless expression in nearly three-dozen languages. <\/p>\n

For the umpteenth time, two inspectors entered Harry Schick\u2019s delicatessen and bakery shop in Pointe Claire last week, to photograph the interior of his store. They were looking for infractions of the province\u2019s language laws. <\/p>\n

Tongue troopers have relentlessly pressed complaints about the sign beside the entrance to Swiss Vienna, which says \u2018Welcome\u2019 in 35 languages \u201cincluding the original languages of Quebec: Cree and Inuktitut,\u201d Schick reminded.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo inspectors came in and asked for permission to check signs inside the store,\u201d he told The Suburban.<\/i> \u201cI asked one of them whether they had a search warrant and they didn\u2019t. So I told her \u2018in that case, you can take photographs of my signs from outside. Then she walked out with the other gentleman.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAs she walked out, she said \u2018on reviens\u2019,\u201d<\/i> Schick added. \u201c\u2018We will return\u2019. I didn\u2019t answer,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cI just let it go. We\u2019ll see what happens; what their next step is.\u201d <\/p>\n

He believes that ultimately it\u2019s unjust for the government to treat one language as superior to another. <\/p>\n

\u201cUntil someone tells me that a French customer is three times better than an English customer, my signs will remain the same size,\u201d he vowed. \u201cUntil the Supreme Court of Canada rules that you can\u2019t have a bilingual sign in Canada\u2014and Quebec is still part of Canada\u2014my signs are going to remain the same size.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t see any court, any government saying you\u2019re not allowed to be bilingual on a sign and impose a fine or a jail term. That\u2019s why my signs are what they are,\u201d Schick said.<\/p>\n

Schick, who has operated his Pointe Claire business for more than a half-century, has repeatedly gained national and international notoriety many times since the province\u2019s tongue troopers first trod into his deli soon after Bill 101 became law, 38 years ago. <\/p>\n

Last year, the attention went viral after he dubbed one of his dishes Pasta Salad Marois<\/a>, after Quebec language police sent him a letter telling him that using the word \u2018pasta\u2019 on in-store signs is prohibited in the province. <\/p>\n

Schick rued that the province keeps secret the identity of whoever files a complaint, which violates standard notions of justice. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe never know our accuser,\u201d he sighed. <\/p>\n

Although proscribing minority language is widely recognized as violating basic freedom of expression, Quebec has opted to suspend those rights by using a loophole in the Canadian constitution known as \u201cthe notwithstanding clause.\u201d
