The city plans to raze derelict residences in Val Martin district in order to build new social housing there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to knock the old homes down and renew the housing infrastructure and get government subsidies for these homes in St. Martin district,\u201d Laval executive committee vice-chairman David De Cotis told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThe project will be implemented in three phases,\u201d De Cotis said in an interview. \u201cThe first phase will entail the construction of more than 100 homes.\u201d<\/p>\n

As reported in The Suburban,<\/i> Laval is also proceeding with a project to replace hundreds of social housing units in Abord \u00e0 Plouffe district as well.<\/p>\n

Some of the Abord \u00e0 Plouffe homes slated for demolition<\/a> were plagued by mould, Councillor Vasilios Karidogiannis told The Suburban<\/i> last month. The work there will be accompanied by major infrastructure improvements, rebuilding underground fresh water, storm runoff and sewage networks.<\/p>\n

De Cotis declined to specify whether the St. Martin social housing also faces mould problems, preferring to extol the benefits to needy residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince day one, when [Mayor] Marc Demers\u2019 administration came to office, it has been one of his administration\u2019s goals to improve that area,\u201d De Cotis said. \u201cIt\u2019s a gratifying project for the city of Laval.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Mr. Demers\u2019 way of giving to those people who are in need,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
