Laval Technopole plans to follow in the footsteps of firms like Bank of Montreal and Canadian National Railways that have found fortune in the American Midwest. <\/p>\n

Next stop on the trade promotion agency\u2019s round of trade missions is Chicago. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe sent Laval businesses an invitation, Jan. 29, to go to Chicago in June,\u201d Technopole international business centre interim director Bruno S\u00e9guin told The Suburban.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWe usually recruit about five Laval companies to participate in our trade missions, where we set up to eight meetings for each firm with potential customers and distributors there,\u201d he said in an interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the major city of the Midwest and the third-largest in the United States,\u201d S\u00e9guin enthused about potential Chicago-Laval links. \u201cWe considered Texas when we sized up potential destinations last year, but Chicago proved more interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oil, dollar\u2019s fall help<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n

The Suburban reached S\u00e9guin just after a Jan. 30 conference, where bank economists forecast that anticipated ample growth opportunities for Quebec businesses in American markets this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe global economy might be on the rocks, but the United States\u2019 economy is booming,\u201d he reported. \u201cThe impetus behind going to Chicago is that we expect it to emerge as a top market for Laval companies during the next few years\u2014so we have to go now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The low Canadian dollar coupled with low energy prices gave firms here a renewed advantage, S\u00e9guin added.<\/p>\n

\u201cChicago is a good market with many decisionmakers and head offices,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have a lot of interest from companies there, which will permit us to set up meetings that would never be possible through cold calling.\u201d<\/p>\n

S\u00e9guin added that he expects a very wide range of potential participants in the Chicago trade mission.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will bring a group of companies whose businesses are completely unrelated,\u201d he explained. \u201cOne could be a web agency and another a furniture manufacturer. It doesn\u2019t matter. We will arrange appropriate meetings tailored to each of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last year, Technopole brought Laval businesspeople to places like California and Vancouver.<\/p>\n

\u201cChicago should be even better,\u201d S\u00e9guin predicted. \u201cIt\u2019s a much bigger market and it\u2019s closer, though not so close that we have a lot of existing links there.\u201d<\/p>\n
