Recently, 40 West was packed to the brim when West Island Community Shares (WICS) hosted their annual Red and White event. The evening promised fine wine, good food and fun. WICS delivered in spades while raising $210,000 for 38 local charities. <\/p>\n

Executive director Caroline Tison summed up the 20 per cent rise in donations over last year with a quote from Dr. Suess.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it\u2019s not.\u201d <\/p>\n

Nada Nasreddine, president of WICS, pointed out that a recent study showed that people who participated in five random acts of kindness lived happier lives. \u201cI want to thank you for being here, we are all happier already and the community will be happier\u201d she said, \u201cyou are helping food banks feed local families in need, cancer patients are better equipped to deal with their diagnosis, youth of all ages can realize their full potential.\u201d<\/p>\n

The participants enjoyed a shrimp and scallop entr\u00e9e followed by tomato and pesto salad and filet mignon. The flourless chocolate souffl\u00e9, compliments of RBC was the perfect culinary ending. Pharmaprix donated both red and white wines that complimented the menu. <\/p>\n

According to Tison, one West Island resident in five reaches out for help to a community organization each year. Each dollar directly translates to more hours of intervention.<\/p>\n

The 27-member fund distribution committee at WICS ensures the allocation of funds based on the needs and priorities of the community. They have distributed $9.7 million since WICS inception.
