\nFederal Minister of Industry Christian Paradis doesn\u2019t expect that last week\u2019s 1.1 per cent cut to Veterans Affairs\u2019 budget will influence the federal government\u2019s interest in divesting itself of the Sainte Anne de Bellevue veterans hospital. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cAs far as I understand, these savings will be achieved by increasing the efficiency with which government services are delivered,\u201d the Conservative government\u2019s Quebec lieutenant said during an hour-long visit to West Island seniors, March 30. \u201cYes, there are discussions under way with officials in Quebec, but you have to understand that these savings are from within the management of the department.\u201d <\/p>\n

\nDuring Mr. Paradis\u2019 visit to the giant Le Cambridge retirement complex in Pointe Claire, resident Marcel Bureau asked \u201cWhy has the federal government tabled an austerity budget for 2012, when the economy seems to be faring well?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe have to rethink how we are doing things when federal spending continues to increase,\u201d replied the minister. \u201cWhen there is a waste of resources or duplication, we need to manage the government in the interest of the Canadian people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cI was on the treasury board review committee,\u201d Mr. Paradis noted. \u201cWhy pay for travel when you can videoconference?\u201d <\/p>\n

\nHe stressed that the federal government is striving to make \u201chumane changes\u201d, adding that more than a third of the 19,200 projected federal public service job cuts will be achieved through retirement during the next three years. <\/p>\n

\nAsked by a senior whether a great deal of the savings will be achieved by chopping the National Defence budget, as the Canadian Forces winds down its operations in Afghanistan, Mr. Paradis\u2019 succinct response was unequivocal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\nThe Minister of Industry added that he is closely monitoring the plight of laid off aerospace workers in Dorval. <\/p>\n

\n\u201cThis is a sad thing,\u201d acknowledged Mr. Paradis. \u201cAveos has experienced a lot of financial difficulty.\u201d <\/p>\n

\nHe stated that nonetheless he expects \u201cAir Canada\u2019s chief executive officer will respect the law, which requires maintenance to be conducted in four centres, including Montreal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am taking a strategic approach,\u201d the minister continued. \u201cThis is a bad time <\/p><\/div>\n

\nbut there is a serious shortage of labour in Canada\u2019s aerospace sector, which I am sure we can address.\u201d <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI have crisscrossed the country and it is shocking to witness the lack of qualified aerospace workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
