{"id":241,"date":"2015-02-11T21:38:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T21:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2015\/02\/11\/crude-could-course-through-laval-by-june\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:40:36","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:40:36","slug":"crude-could-course-through-laval-by-june","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2015\/02\/11\/crude-could-course-through-laval-by-june\/","title":{"rendered":"Crude could course through Laval by June"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By Robert Frank<\/b><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Up to 300,000 barrels of oil a day could begin to flow through \u00cele J\u00e9sus this summer. <\/p>\n<p>Energy giant Enbridge had expected last fall to begin to carry crude from Western Canada and Northern United States via its pipeline that runs through Laval to the Suncor refinery in East End Montreal. <\/p>\n<p>However, the National Energy Board (NEB) put the brakes on Enbridge\u2019s proposal in October, citing concerns about the safety of the pipeline where it crosses major waterways. In a statement, Feb. 6, the federal energy regulator said that Enbridge had \u201cadequately demonstrated that its methodology for the number and placement of valves is currently appropriate. There have been 17 new valves installed as a result of the hearing process; there are now a total of 62 valves along the pipeline.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Enbridge has declined to specify whether the NEB had raised questions about safety where its pipeline enters Laval from Rivi\u00e8re des Mille \u00celes opposite Terrbonne and exits via the Rivi\u00e8re des Prairies toward Montreal. <\/p>\n<p>At the time, Laval\u2019s environment chief Gilles Beno\u00eet reassured <i>The Suburban<\/i> that the pipeline didn\u2019t pose a danger to the city\u2019s drinking water supply. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNonetheless, the pipeline also crosses the Ottawa River further upstream, where it could contaminate Lake of Two Mountains and affect the drinking water supplies of several municipalities, possibly even Laval. <\/p>\n<p>Also, there are many fresh water wells in Eastern Laval that supply farms and residences, so we want to ensure that these won\u2019t be contaminated, in the event of a leak.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Although Enbridge is optimistic about the prospect of moving forward within four months, NEB slapped two new safety conditions that the pipeline operator must satisfy: an analysis of whether additional valves ought to be installed; and more analysis to determine whether and where water crossings would benefit from more valves.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Enbridge-pipeline-sign-Laval.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Enbridge-pipeline-sign-Laval.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Enbridge-Line-9B-pipline-map-Laval-1024x990.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/Enbridge-Line-9B-pipline-map-Laval-1024x990.jpg\" height=\"309\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Robert Frank www.thesuburban.com Up to 300,000 barrels of oil a day could begin to flow through \u00cele J\u00e9sus this summer.
