No family remained to attend parents\u2019 funerals: \u201cIt was heartbreaking\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

After James and Olive Cashion lost their only child during World War II, their son\u2019s friends \u201cadopted\u201d the couple for the remaining four decades of their lives. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe and his NDG school buddies from the 1920s to the early 1940s were great outdoorsmen,\u201d said Alex, who asked that his family name remain confidential. <\/p>\n

Alex knew the Cashions while growing up in Roxboro, where he attended Riverdale High School. Now residing in Texas, he learned from a reader of The Suburban that the town of Charleval, France, plans to honour their son, Allan Cashion\u2019s, sacrifice, June 28. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cashions were like grandparents, we saw them for dinner in \u00c0 Ma Baie every Sunday,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> in a telephone interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough I never met Allan Cashion,\u201d he said, \u201cthrough them I knew him well, as one of my Dad\u2019s best friends.\u201d <\/p>\n

His father, Norm, served in the Canadian Army during World War II, \u201cbut he always said that Allan thought that the Royal Canadian Air Force<\/a> was more debonair.\u201d <\/p>\n

After the war was over, Norm and his wife Frankie took care of the Cashions, \u201cfor many, many years.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the mid-1970s, we moved them into a ground floor apartment at the corner of St. John and Pierrefonds boulevards,\u201d Alex remembered. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Cashions never owned a car,\u201d he explained. \u201cAs a young driver in the 1970s, that meant that there was always an excuse for me to use the family car to take Mr. and Mrs. Cashion somewhere\u2014whether they needed to or not. It was great!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly, Mrs. Cashion passed away at home in the late 1970s,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe moved Mr. Cashion into a nursing home at the corner of Pierrefonds and Gouin boulevards, where he lived for several more years.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNorm arranged the funerals for both of them,\u201d he recalled. \u201cWe were the only ones there. It was heartbreaking.\u201d <\/p>\n

Alex said that Mr. Cashion, who retired from the Montreal Star<\/i> in the early 1950s, bequeathed him his war medals and Mrs. Cashion\u2019s wedding ring which, 30 years ago, he offered to his wife as an engagement ring. <\/p>\n
