The right lane of St. Jean Boulevard is
\nnow off-limits to rush-hour motorists\u2014unless you\u2019re driving a bus, a taxi or a car
\ncarrying two or more passengers.<\/p>\n

City officials agreed to the new restrictions, which went into effect Aug. 20, to
\nlet the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Transports de Montr\u00e9al<\/a><\/i> (STM) conduct a six-month
\ntrial. The STM wants to see whether the
\nreserved lane will help to reduce congestion along the clogged north-south
\nartery, which has long operated well
\nbeyond its design capacity.<\/p>\n

Dollard des Ormeaux mayor Ed
\nJaniszewski doesn\u2019t anticipate a dramatic
\nimprovement.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly some 15 percent of vehicles use
\nthe inside lane because much of the time\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\nthey are stuck behind a bus that stops frequently,\u201d he told The Suburban<\/i> in an
\ninterview.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo there should not be any great difference in the traffic, except that since
\nlast year there are so many more homes
\nin Pierrefonds that the number of cars
\nhas increased. Every hundred cars more
\nper hour just adds another hundred cars
\nidling at red lights.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hopeful that more people will
\ntake the bus to the Metro and reduce the
\nnumber of cars,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut people don\u2019t want to leave their cars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Janiszewski acknowledged that
\npersistent construction delays on
\nHighway 20 have tripled ridership on the
\nexpress bus to C\u00f4te Vertu.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the past three years it has
\nrisen from 4,000 to 12,000. It\u2019s a good
\nalternative for many people to take an express bus and a Metro to wherever they
\nare going. But West Islanders love their
\ncars and they\u2019re not necessarily going to
\njump at the opportunity in greater numbers.<\/p>\n

He said that bad planning has left West
\nIsland officials with no options to improve
\ntraffic flow on their thoroughfares.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n
\n<\/p>\n

Mayor Janiszewski is skeptical that the
\nWest Island will see any rail or subway\n<\/p><\/div>\n

\ninfrastructure introduced during the
\nnext half-century. However, he welcomed
\na planned Metro station at Bois Franc
\nthat will connect the Laval loop with the
\nsubway along Decarie.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n\u201cIt won\u2019t come to the West Island but it
\nwill at least be close by in St. Laurent.
\nThe Bois Franc station will be easier for
\nWest Islanders north of the 40 to access
\nthan the C\u00f4te Vertu Metro is.\u201d<\/p>\n
