{"id":2366,"date":"2012-09-05T13:22:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T13:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2012\/09\/05\/decision-2012-nelligan-constituents\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:42:03","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:42:03","slug":"decision-2012-nelligan-constituents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/05\/decision-2012-nelligan-constituents\/","title":{"rendered":"Decision 2012: Nelligan constituents give James another strong mandate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Racist grafitti mars election day<\/b><\/p>\n<p> By Robert Frank<\/p>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>     Liberal <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yolande_James\" target=\"_blank\">Yolande James<\/a> polled more than three-and-a-half times the number of votes of her nearest rival in Nelligan riding, earning a fourth consecutive mandate with more than double the number of votes garnered by all her opponents combined. <\/p>\n<p>     A Hydro Quebec power failure plunged the riding into darkness just before the close of polls, delaying ballot counting for nearly an hour. <\/p>\n<p> However, at 8:58 p.m., a Liberal party worker at James\u2019 Nelligan riding party headquarters in Pierrefonds shouted \u201cWe\u2019re elected, guys!\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n As <i>The Suburban<\/i> went to press, James had garnered 10,755 votes and 67 per cent of the vote with 75 out of 197 polls reporting.<\/p>\n<p>CAQ hopeful Philippe Boileau trailed at 3,045 and PQ\u2019s Marcos Archambault earned the confidence of only 1,526 voters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<br \/>\n Liberal party faithful continued to watch a generator-powered television as <\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\nthe results poured in.<\/p>\n<p>James sat down to watch <i>The&nbsp;<\/i><i>Suburban <\/i>editor Beryl Wajsman parry P\u00e9quiste notstrums on CTV News, then exclaimed when a sovereignist commentator suggested that <a href=\"http:\/\/pq.org\/etiquettes\/Immigration\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Parti qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois<\/i> restrictions&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/pq.org\/etiquettes\/Immigration\" target=\"_blank\">on cultural communities<\/a> would only apply to new Canadians.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cYou mean it\u2019s ok [to discriminate against] immigrants?\u201d she exclaimed.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<br \/>\n \u201cI\u2019ll be ready,\u201d she asserted. \u201cIf she wants to have a referendum, she\u2019s going to have the representative for Nelligan in her way\u2014and I will be representing the voice of the people here.\u201d <\/div>\n<p>\n Election day was marred by racist graffiti sprayed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wibca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">West Island BlackCommunity Association<\/a> headquarters in Roxboro, together with a note hanging on the mailbox saying \u201cN&#8212;&#8211; go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-kxOeD7sw8_k\/UEdR_VHj_zI\/AAAAAAAAAFI\/2s6QgmPIvZ8\/s1600\/120904+Eftyhia+Volakakis+and+Urbain+Pre%CC%81gent+-+Nelligan+Liberal+hq.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"240\" src=\"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/120904-Eftyhia-Volakakis-and-Urbain-Pre\u0301gent-Nelligan-Liberal-hq.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\nYolande James\u2019 official agent Urbain Pr\u00e9gent (right) holds a flashlight so Liberal campaign worker Eftyhia Volakakis can keep tally of votes on election night, after a Hydro Quebec power failure plunged parts of Nelligan riding into darkness and delayed the ballot count for nearly an hour.&nbsp;<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Racist grafitti mars election day By Robert Frank www.thesuburban.com Liberal Yolande James polled more than three-and-a-half times the number of votes of her nearest rival in Nelligan riding, earning a fourth consecutive mandate with more than double the number of votes garnered by all her opponents combined.
