{"id":2356,"date":"2012-09-13T10:33:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-13T10:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rf.podcastfixit.com\/index.php\/2012\/09\/13\/canadas-largest-blood-donor-clinic\/"},"modified":"2015-06-01T19:42:03","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T19:42:03","slug":"canadas-largest-blood-donor-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newscoverage.org\/index.php\/2012\/09\/13\/canadas-largest-blood-donor-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s largest blood-donor clinic surpasses objective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\nBy Robert Frank <br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesuburban.com\/\">www.thesuburban.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>      Laval\u2019s 39th annual blood donor clinic tapped 884 residents this year for the gift of life, Sept. 8, exceeding its 850-donor objective. <\/p>\n<p>      \u201cIt\u2019s the biggest annual blood donor clinic in Canada,\u201d enthused city spokeswoman Nadine Lussier, who attributed the success to a concerted municipal effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard work is the key, and for many years Mayor Gilles Vaillaincourt has been<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"column\">\nhighly involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year, the city enlisted Laval boxing&nbsp;star Jean Pascal to promote the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>      \u201cEvery 80 seconds, someone in Quebec needs blood,\u201d Pascal said. \u201cThe gift of blood is the best gift that we can give.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <b>Called on cultural communities<\/b><\/p>\n<p>He and city councilor Sylvie Clermont appealed, in particular, to Laval\u2019s cultural communities to come out and support the clinic, because \u201ctheir blood is better at helping to treat certain hereditary&nbsp;blood disorders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something that the city of Laval&nbsp;can be proud of,\u201d Lussier remarked. \u201cIt shows how dynamic this city is, how involved people are in the life of our neighbourhoods and how strongly they believe in this cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"column\">\n<br \/>\nLussier, who herself donated blood at the Bois de Boulogne sports centre clinic,&nbsp;noted that Laval municipal employees are encouraged to participate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny employee who wants to give blood that day gets time off work without penalty. That provides an incentive for us to go and be a part of this big, big adventure.
