\nProposals to preserve Beaconsfield\u2019s bucolic charm have
\noffended many citizens who showed up at an information meeting at city hall,
\nSept. 17, to ask about proposed new zoning rules.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cPeople want to have the feeling of being in the country and
\nwant that sort of aesthetic,\u201d observed District 3 councilor Wade Staddon. \u201cAt a
\npoint, it\u2019s a philosophical choice.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe city plans to table a zoning bylaw at its Sept. 24
\nmeeting that would revise Beaconsfield\u2019s zoning rules for the first time in two
\ndecades.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nCity urban planning director Denis Chabot told citizens who
\nattended the meeting that details will be published in an advertisement in The Suburban, <\/i>and are also available on
\nthe city\u2019s www.beaconsfield.ca<\/a> web site.<\/i><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThere are communities, particularly to the east of us, where owners have done a lot of renovation and the aesthetics
\nhave been compromised,\u201d said Mayor David Pollock. \u201cWe don\u2019t want that to happen
\nhere.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThe most stringent restrictions would be imposed on
\nresidents who live on the south side of waterfront streets, to ensure that
\npassersby can see the lake.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nDuring the meeting, Lakeshore road resident Shelly Baird
\nquestioned Chabot about inconsistencies in the proposals.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nChabot acknowledged that prestigious waterfront properties
\nalong Gables Court, East Gables Court and Thompson Point would be exempt from
\nthe visual access provisions.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe city\u2019s master plan includes only riverfront roads, so
\nthese streets are not included in the view bylaw,\u201d he explained.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nBaird also asked about new rules that would ban construction
\nmaterial or equipment from driveways of south-side lakefront properties.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nChabot replied that equipment will, in fact, be permitted
\n\u201cduring season of use.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe confirmed that, off-season \u201cyou will be allowed to store
\nyour sailboat on the side and block the view [of Lake St. Louis].\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nHe explained that the restriction on obstructions to public
\nview \u201conly applies to permanent structures like walls.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nElizabeth Nader-di Genova has initiated a petition against
\nwhat she considers discriminatory new zoning rules, attracting 50 signatures in
\nthe first 24 hours.<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cLakeshore road residents face far more restrictions than
\nany other Beaconsfield citizens,\u201d she told The
\nSuburban <\/i>in an interview following Monday\u2019s information meeting. \u201cI\u2019m
\nsurprised that they still let us come home late at night.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nShe was incredulous that \u201ccity councilors like District 1
\nrepresentative Michael Montagno, who lives on the north side of Lakeshore, are
\nadvocating measures like these against their neighbours across the street.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe city circulated the zoning notice in mid-summer, when
\nmany people were on vacation,\u201d she added. \u201cMany people didn\u2019t know about the
