Economic Development Canada<\/a>
\nannounced Sept. 13 that it will give
\n$516,000 to the Laval Technopole
\nInternational Business Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to support Quebec\u2019s
\neconomic growth by encouraging exports
\nand helping businesses that want to sell
\ntheir products abroad,\u201d said federal cabinet minister Denis Lebel.<\/p>\n

In an interview, Export Development
\nCanada senior advisors R\u00e9mi Labarre and
\nLinda Mayer told The Suburban<\/i> that the
\nmoney isn\u2019t a contribution to the organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cRather, it is for the portion of services
\nthat help companies,\u201d said Labarre.
\n\u201cLaval Technopole<\/a> has made a very strong
\ncontribution to the economic growth of
\nthe Laval region.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada\u2019s economy is heavily dependent on exports,\u201d he explained, \u201cand small-
\nand medium-sized companies (SMEs)
\nface many challenges in developing markets abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis could involve currency fluctuations, transport challenges, customs
\nissues as well as foreign rules and regulations of all kinds of norms that the agri-food sector confronts.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
\n\u201cThat\u2019s where Laval Technopole come
\nin,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey organize outside
\nseminars and training aimed at getting
\ncompanies ready to export and plan how
\nthey will confront those sorts of challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayer added that Laval\u2019s International
\nBusiness Centre also organizes missions
\nabroad, to help local companies make
\ninroads in international markets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey also help Laval companies develop business plans for going abroad,\u201d she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s say that you\u2019re going into China,
\nfor example,\u201d offered Labarre. \u201cThere is a
\ncompletely different culture there to
\nlearn about, as well as how to approach
\npeople and how to conduct a business
\nmeeting with Chinese counterparts.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the past three years, Labarre
\nnoted, Laval Technopole\u2019s International
\nBusiness Centre has already helped 155
\nLaval SMEs gain a foothold abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt works together with Canada\u2019s international trade department<\/a> to put companies in touch with prospective clients
\nthrough Canada\u2019s worldwide network of
