\nFirst two-storey store in Quebec opens in
\nDorval<\/i><\/b><\/b><\/div>\n

\nWal-Mart officials are crowing about
\ntheir newest store\u2019s strategic location, which opened, Sept. 19, just blocks
\nfrom Pierre Eliot Trudeau international airport.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIt\u2019s in a really convenient
\nlocation,\u201d enthused Alex Roberton, the retail chain\u2019s director of corporate
\naffairs for Canada. \u201cBecause it\u2019s so close to the airport, we see a lot of
\ntravelers come through here.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cI don\u2019t have the exact figures for
\nsales of suitcases,\u201d he said, \u201cbut we make sure that those aisles are
\nwell-stocked.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nThe Dorval store is the fourth of
\nsixteen new facilities that Wal-Mart has announced it will open. Located in the
\ntwo-storey former Zellers outlet in Dorval shopping centre, Wal-Mart planners
\nhad to deviate from the single-floor layout that characterizes most Wal-Marts
\naround the world.<\/div>\n
\n\u201dWe\u2019ve put in a shopping cart
\nescalator so you don\u2019t have to use the elevator to go up and down,\u201d Roberton
\nsaid.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIt is a separate escalator between
\nthe up and down escalators,\u201d explained the Pointe Claire native. \u201cYou load your
\ncart and you go up on the regular escalator.<\/div>\n
\nThe former Royal Canadian Navy
\nofficer, who served at sea for eight years before returning to Montreal,
\nlikened the retail giant to running a ship.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cIt takes lowered costs for every
\nsingle area of the business so we can keep prices down for customers,\u201d Roberton
\nsaid, \u201cbecause that is what Wal-Mart is all about: reducing the cost of living
\nfor Canadians.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nHe cited an example from Wal-Mart\u2019s
\ngreen program.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cDuring the summer, the lighting in
\n300 of our 330 stores is controlled by head office,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe bring
\nthe lighting down to two-thirds of full intensity.\u201d<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThat one initiative saves us $1.5-2
\nmillion per year,\u201d he concluded. \u201cIt\u2019s just one of the ways that we take costs
