When Laval resident Maurice
\nAbourmad entered Cit\u00e9 de la sant\u00e9,<\/i> his
\ncoronary artery was almost completely
\nblocked. Today, he is \u201cin top shape\u201d,
\naccording to his doctor.<\/p>\n

Not only did his medical team succeed in reopening the flow of blood
\nfrom his heart, they did so without the
\nusual lifelong side-effects typical of
\nthis sort of heart surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the first time in Canada
\nthat a scaffold was used on a clinical
\nbasis,\u201d explained hemodynamics cardiologist Dr. Samer Mansour.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsually surgeons implant a stent,
\nmade of metallic chromium or stainless steel to open up the blood vessel,\u201d
\nDr. Mansour told The Suburban<\/i> in an
\ninterview. \u201cAfter a foreign object is
\ninserted into a blood vessel, patients
\nhave to take blood thinners for the rest
\nof their lives to avoid the risk of life-threatening blood clots.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA scaffold is bioabsorbable,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt decomposes into water and
\ncarbon dioxide.\u201d<\/p>\n

He explained that while the scaffold
\nopened up the artery the same way as a
\nstent does, it is made of a material that
\nslowly disappears from the body within 12-18 months of the surgery.<\/p>\n

\n

In addition, the alternative to
\na metal stent is impregnated
\nwith heart medicine, which it
\ndelivers directly to the heart, precisely where it is needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we have learned is that
\nevery time you put a stent in a
\nblood vessel, there is some
\ndegree of risk,\u201d said Dr. Mansour.<\/p>\n

In contrast, \u201cThe drug that is on the scaffold prepares the
\nblood vessel for better healing.\u201d <\/p>\n

The result is vastly improved quality of life for the patient, he
\nclaimed.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n
\nThe groundbreaking surgery
\nwas authorized by a special
\nHealth Canada permit, after scientific trials were completed on
\nthe scaffold device.<\/p>\n

The dramatically better outcome for heart surgery patients
\ncomes together with with a significantly higher price. The new
\nprocedure costs three to four
\ntimes as much as a traditional
\nmetal stent.<\/p>\n

From the first recipient\u2019s perspective, though, the results are
\nunequivocal.
\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n\u201cWhen I returned home, I didn\u2019t feel as though I had a device
\nimplanted in me,\u201d he concluded.
\n\u201cI\u2019m eager to return to my previous pace of life.\u201d<\/p>\n
