He demonstrated how maternal care influences molecular<br \/>\ndevelopment in a child\u2019s brain, which can affect its ability to cope with<br \/>\nstress later in life.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIn addition to shedding light on how to prevent disease, the<br \/>\nscience of epigenetic programming through maternal behaviour also has public<br \/>\npolicy implications.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n\u201cMichael\u2019s work in neuroscience is hugely important,\u201d Alain<br \/>\nGratton, director of the Douglas Institute research centre said in a statement.<br \/>\n\u201cThanks to his discoveries, we better understand how parenting affects the<br \/>\nplasticity of genes involved in certain mental disorders.\u201d<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAfter teaching at his alma mater, Concordia University, from<br \/>\n1983-1985, Meaney jumped to McGill University\u2019s research centre at Douglas<br \/>\nHospital. He is also a professor in McGill\u2019s psychiatry, neurology and<br \/>\nneurosurgery departments.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nKnown for being among the most highly cited academics in<br \/>\nneuroscience, he was also invested as a knight of the <i>Ordre national du Qu\u00e9bec <\/i>in 2007, and is a member of the Royal<br \/>\nSociety of Canada.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nMeaney was one of 44 people who were honoured at Friday\u2019s<br \/>\nceremony.
