Four years ago, German pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim<\/a> was crowing about the new, $36 million research
\ncentre that it had just opened in Laval at
\nthe junction of highways 15 and 440.<\/p>\n

On Sept. 18, the company abruptly
\nannounced in a news release that it
\nintends to close the centre and eliminate
\n170 jobs\u2014more than one-fifth of its
\nCanadian workforce\u2014in one of the company\u2019s four main research centres worldwide.<\/p>\n

The International Center of Excellence
\nfor Virology was developing medication to
\ntreat lethal viruses like HIV, which causes
\nAIDS. The company has already produced
\na drug to treat the disease. It also was
\ndeveloping molecules to treat Hepatitis C,
\nfor which the company currently has a
\ndrug Laval-developed drug undergoing
\nadvanced clinical trials.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond these compounds, we don\u2019t see the need to invest in new research programs,\u201d Dr. Michel Pairet told The
\nSuburban<\/i> in a telephone interview from
\nthe company\u2019s world headquarters in
\nIngelheim, Germany.<\/p>\n

Boehringer Ingelheim\u2019s global head of research and development added that
\nthat the impact on its Laval employees
\nwill be addressed \u201con a case by case
\nbasis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n \u201cSome will go into retirement,\u201d suggested Dr. Pairet, noting that the facility
\nwill remain open until March 31, 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn addition, as soon as we have openings in our other research centres, we
\nwill offer them on a preferential basis to
\nour colleagues in Laval, if they are prepared to move to one of our research
\nfacilities in Germany, Austria or the
\nUnited States and have the needed
\nexpertise profile.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will also do everything possible to
\nhelp them find new positions with external partners in the private and public sector, as well as investors,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
