Seven other Quebec cities are following Laval’s lead this year, as the Laval
\nhealth and social services centre
\n(CSSS) held its fifth annual Tree Day,
\nSept. 26.<\/p>\n

Staff placed trees in the ground at the
\nCit\u00e9 de la sant\u00e9<\/i> hospital as well as the
\nIdola St. Jean and Rose de Lima residences.<\/p>\n

The event is the brainchild of heart
\nsurgeon Dr. Fran\u00e7ois Reeves, who came
\nup with the idea in order to advocate
\nhis belief that a clean environment is
\nessential to good health.<\/p>\n

This year, children from the La
\nCachette<\/i> daycare behind Cit\u00e9 de la
\nsant\u00e9<\/i> took part in planting a
\ntree.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re setting an example for these
\ntiny Laval residents,\u201d said CSSS spokeswoman Jos\u00e9e Provost, \u201cso they can
\ngrow up in a cleaner environment and
\ndevelop an environment consciousness
\nthat will last throughout their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Participants attended a corn boil at
\neach of the planting sites, shucking
\nears harvested from a local farm near
\nthe Laval hospital. Remotely employed
\nstaff was encouraged to car share, to minimize the impact of the event on
\nthe environment.<\/p>\n

The cost of the trees is sponsored by the city of Laval, the Institut national de sant\u00e9 publique<\/i> and the M\u00e9decins <\/i>francophones du Canada.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s one of a number of activities that CSSS Laval organizes as part of its Green Plan,\u201d explained Provost.<\/p>\n
